A few weeks ago ABC Channel 7 News aired an unfortunate incident to a landlord in Nassau County, Long Island, New York. A landlord was beaten and thrown down the stairs in her own home by her tenant. She was sent to the hospital and the tenant was sent to Nassau County Jail. It is wise for landlords and tenants to utilize a Realtor in the renting process. Landlords will benefit by verified prospective tenants’ employment, income, and credit history. Prospective tenants will benefit by verified certificate of occupancy to legal use of the apartment. Under specific conditions Nassau County does authorize renting a room in a homeowner’s house (verify at the building department in the town / village the prospective rental property is located).
